How To Write Great Copy

by mikey on August 10, 2009

It’s no secret that you have to use attention getting words and phrases for hot selling copy.

I’m going to show you how easy it is. All you have to do is follow some simple rules.

Headlines Always Come First………Right?

Yes, in at least 2 ways.

One, always write the headline first. It sets the tone of the entire article and will be the first thing to influence a reader whether to go any further.

Two, It really does go first.

So, what do you need to write a truly great headline? There are several elements, but the first thing is color and drama. I mean, you really want to GRAB ATTENTION, and you’re not going to do that by writing a school essay.

Here’s an example. I was recently asked to set up a simple blog style website for a Bowls Club. The average age of the members was 66 years, but they thought they had to have a “succession” plan by trying to attract new members. Bowls has an “old” image so they had a conservative outlook.

At the same time they knew they had to modernize a little to appeal to new younger potential members.

The web site worked out pretty well for them (after some long discussions) and they were happy with it.

Then came time to write some material for posting out to houses in their local area. They wanted to do this by hand delivering leaflets to each house in the locality of Holland Park, about 5-6,000.

Here is what they had ready to go when they asked my opinion:

“Want to learn Bowls?
Then ring your local Club and discover how easy it is, and come along to a free lesson on Saturday 25 June 2009.
We will give you free tuition and you can enjoy a free BBQ after.
Ring xxxx xxxx to book.
See you here!”

Well it was what they had used in the past and it usually dragged in about 4 or 5 visitors.
I persuaded them to try one of these headlines:

How Would You Like Some Free Beer This Saturday?
Who Else Wants Free Beer?
You’re Invited To….
There’s Nothing Quite Like Your Own Local Club
Holland Park’s Best Kept Secret

It took a bit of convincing, but in the end they chose three to try out and after I added some more short copy, out they went.

Result? 23 new locals turned up on the day!

There are numerous resources to stimulate you. You can find them in the Resources Page.

I’ve used this example to demonstrate how a different approach can not only be more effective but more fun too!

SEO Secrets Revealed!

by mikey on September 13, 2008

When you are starting out there is a confusing array of information, software and products promising the world and more.

My simple advice is don’t do anything! Well not just yet.

My reason for saying this is that you can get almost anything you need for free if you are patient and willing to do a little searching. Occasionally I will recommend some products that I have found useful but again that does not mean it will be right for you.

Early in my Internet Marketing debut days I fell into the trap of purchasing just about every product on the market and you know what?

I just got sidetracked and kept changing my mind about what was the “best” way. I didn’t make a dime for about 2 years simply because I lost focus. Now, I’m a lot wiser and it is hard to look back and believe I actually did some of the things I did.

But now it is now a case of a “lesson well learned”.

One of the best resources I came across was a free Search Engine Optimization book I just happened across about 4 years ago. The book recommends a particular product and I highly recommend it to you too, but in any case the book itself was a real eye opener for me.

It clarified my thinking and I was just plain lucky, as I later discovered, to have stumbled across an author who was later to become highly respected throughout the internet marketing community.

As the years passed however it looks to me like the author became a little greedy and began promoting so many other products via joint venture partnerships that he lost a little credibility. Nevertheless the book and the product he promotes here are still the best on the market, and as a free resource, well worth a look.

One word of warning. The book is up to date as of today and although you can sign up for more updates quite early on in the book, get ready for a lot of emails that will try to sell you something else!

Take my advice:

  • Read the book.
  • Absorb the great information.
  • Only buy the product if you feel ready to move to the next stage.

You can download the free book here.

As you know I started this blog to open up my portal and …some… free services to more people.
I will still be maintaining the “closed” service for private clients who will continue to receive the usual personalised services which their ongoing businesses require.
So, it’s not really a move more of an
